The Strongest Coffee We Sell Isn't What You'd Think
Share
Short answer: if you actually want more caffeine, roast level won't get you there, the bean species will. Our Max Caf Blend combines Arabica from Tanzania with Robusta from India specifically because Robusta beans carry roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica. It's the one blend in our lineup built around caffeine strength rather than flavor balance. Alongside it, our African Espresso takes a different approach entirely, a three-country blend built purely around flavor and body for espresso.

Why Robusta, not roast, is what actually raises caffeine
We've said it before: roast level barely moves the needle on caffeine. What actually matters is which coffee species is in your bag. There are two main species used in coffee production, Arabica and Robusta, and they're genuinely different in caffeine content, not by a small margin.
Arabica beans run roughly 1.2% to 1.5% caffeine by weight. Robusta beans run closer to 2.2% to 2.7%, sometimes higher. That means a cup made from Robusta can carry close to double the caffeine of the same size cup made from pure Arabica. Robusta also tends to taste more bitter and earthy on its own, which is exactly why it's usually blended with Arabica rather than sold solo, it adds caffeine and body without completely taking over the flavor.
Max Caf Blend: built for strength
This is the one product in our lineup built specifically around that Robusta caffeine boost. Max Caf Blend combines Arabica from Tanzania with Robusta from India, giving you a noticeably stronger caffeine kick than any of our single-species blends, without needing to drink twice as many cups to get there.
Tanzania Arabica and India Robusta, blended specifically to give you a noticeably stronger cup, not just a bolder-tasting one.
If you've read our earlier piece on caffeine and roast level, this is the exception worth knowing: bean species moves caffeine content far more than how long or hot the beans were roasted ever will.
African Espresso: three countries, one bag
Where Max Caf Blend is about strength, African Espresso is about geography and flavor. It's a medium/dark roast blend combining beans from Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, three countries widely regarded as producing some of the most distinctive coffee in the world, each contributing something different to the final cup.
A blend of Kenyan, Tanzanian, and Ethiopian beans, built to hold up to espresso pressure while keeping some of the bright, complex character each origin is known for.
It's worth putting next to our Tanzania single origin if you want to taste the difference directly, the single origin shows you exactly what Tanzanian coffee tastes like on its own, while African Espresso shows you what happens when that same character gets blended alongside Kenya and Ethiopia for a bolder, espresso-ready cup.
Frequently asked questions
Is Max Caf Blend safe to drink daily?
For most healthy adults, yes, in moderation, the same way any regular coffee is. Since it carries more caffeine per cup than our other blends, it's worth being a bit more mindful of how many cups you're having, especially if you're also drinking other caffeinated beverages that day.
Does Max Caf Blend taste different because of the Robusta?
Yes, slightly. Robusta tends to bring a bolder, more bitter, earthier note compared to Arabica alone. Blended with Tanzanian Arabica, it lands on a fuller-bodied, more intense cup rather than a purely bitter one.
What's the difference between African Espresso and a single origin from one of those countries?
A single origin, like our Tanzania, comes from one place and shows that region's character on its own. African Espresso blends beans from three countries together, which trades some of that individual origin clarity for a bolder, more consistent cup built specifically for espresso.
Can I use African Espresso for regular drip coffee, not just espresso?
Yes, despite the name, it works fine as a regular medium/dark roast for drip, French press, or any brew method. "Espresso" here describes the roast style and intended use, not a requirement.
Which is stronger tasting, African Espresso or Max Caf Blend?
They're strong in different ways. African Espresso is bolder in flavor and roast intensity. Max Caf Blend is stronger specifically in caffeine content due to its Robusta component, though its flavor is more about the caffeine kick than deep complexity.
Need the caffeine, or the flavor?
Max Caf Blend for strength, African Espresso for a bold, three-origin cup.
